The size of a pool design plays a number of important roles not only in the surrounding yard space but also within the pool itself. Length, width, and depth are all important, and they’re all related. A pool design can address size in a couple of different ways. Shallow pools allow for more recreation and play. A deep pool design allows for more diving. Keep in mind that deep pools generally have smaller shallow ends. For every inground pool design, some sort of balance needs to be reached between the size of the playful shallow end and the depth of the exciting diving area.
As a pool design with constant height and width gets deeper, the size of the shallow end gets smaller. The smaller shallow end reduces the potential for a playful, fun pool design. This dilemma factors greatly into determining the size of any pool design. If you’re short on space, a shallow pool design is probably the safest bet. If you have unlimited space, feel free to make the pool as deep as you’d like; the large area can accommodate a balance between a large shallow end and a very deep diving area. The pool budget might also be a concern. A shallow pool design can reduce the overall size and the overall cost. Finally, consider functionality. If your kids are diving champions, a shallow pool design and a dive rock might not cut it. If you don’t have children at home, a diving board and a deep, diving end will probably not be a priority. A relaxing, formal pool design can be shallow and luxurious like a bathhouse or spa.
